在考研英语的Part A 小作文部分，书信作为考查的重点所在，种类繁多。在前面我们曾就以题目为例，详细地解析过前13种书信：即建议信、投诉信、咨询信、感谢信、祝贺信、道歉信、慰问信、申请信、求职信、推荐信、介绍信、辞职信和邀请信的写作方法及其注意事项。今天本文就对考研英语小作文中的第十四种书信——拒绝信——进行深入的分析。
　　拒绝信，英文中称为letter of rejection，是就所收到的邀请告知对方自己因为某些原因而不能接受的信件。书写此类信件时，措辞一定要礼貌含蓄，所有信息点皆须囊括在内。
　　一般来说，在考研英语中，拒绝信主体部分的写作可按照三个步骤进行，即“三步走”策略。接下来就以题目为例，具体解析一下这个策略。
　　例题：
　　Directions：
　　Suppose you are Li Ming. Yesterday, you received a letter of invitation from David Benson, one of your students, to attend the graduation ceremony of this June in your university. But you cannot accept his invitation. Write a letter to him, telling him your refusal, stating your reason(s), and making an apology.
　　You should write about 100 words on ANSWER SHEET 2.
　　Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter. Use “Li Ming” instead.
　　Do not write the address.
　　题目所给的规定情景是昨天自己接到了学生本森的邀请信，邀请去参加学校今年六月份的毕业典礼。但是自己不能接受这次邀请，因此题目要求写一封进行回绝，陈述原因并进行道歉。实际上就是对上封邀请信的恢复而已。
　　根据上面所提的拒绝信写作“三步走”策略，具体操作如下：
　　首段：It gives me great pleasure to be invited to attend your graduation ceremony on June 30th in the Shane Hall in our university. I would like to accept your warm invitation but I cannot due to an earlier appointment.
　　在拒绝信中，写作的必要前提就是自己已经接到了别人的邀请。因此，无论是否会接受邀请，回信中首先要做的事就是对别人的邀请表示感谢，同时句子上也须比较礼貌真挚。其次，才要表明目的，告知对方自己不能接受，并简要陈述理由。因为这是在拂别人的好意，所以用语一定要委婉。
　　中段：Two weeks ago, I made an appointment with one of my former colleagues, Professor Berkley, who would come to China to make an academic research. He asked me for help and I have consented. We are going to leave Beijing on June 25th.
　　第二段中，就是要向对方解释自己不能接受邀请的具体原因了。至于原因为何，在于诸位同学的自由发挥，但是需要记住的是要逻辑严谨，不要让收信人一看就知道是前言不搭后语，谎话连篇。
　　尾段：Therefore, I feel terribly sorry for being unable to attend the event. I wish the graduation ceremony a success.
　　本段中，紧接前面内容，向对方解释完原因之后，就要为自己不能接受邀请而进行道歉了。同时，虽然不能亲自应邀前往，但是也要表达美好祝愿，这也是人际交流的常识与礼貌。
　　在考研英语的书信表达中，类似的首段或尾段的套用句式比较丰富，大家需要在复习过程中进行有意的积累，并在写作中加以运用：
　　1. Thank you so much for the invitation, and I really appreciate it which means a great deal.
　　2. It was very nice of you to invite me, but I'm sorry to say that I will not be able to come.
　　3. I wish the …… a great success.
　　因此完整范文如下：
　　Dear Mr. Benson,
　　It gives me great pleasure to be invited to attend your graduation ceremony on June 30th in the Shane Hall in our university. I would like to accept your warm invitation but I cannot due to an earlier appointment.
　　Two weeks ago, I made an appointment with one of my former colleagues, Professor Berkley, who would come to China to make an academic research. He asked me for help and I have consented. We are going to leave Beijing on June 25th.
　　Therefore, I feel terribly sorry for being unable to attend the event. I wish the graduation ceremony a success.
