　　文章通过大量举例论证，分析人们盲目推崇建坝的原因及其带来的不良后果，建议和呼吁人们科学建坝。作为阅读的第一篇文章，在长难句方面，文章难度也略低，重点是要识别不同的句型，如It形式主语句型、强调句;此外，找到句子主干也是重点。下面就其中的5个句子进行详解：

　　【例句分析】本句的主干是It doesn’t help that…，其中that引导宾语从句。It doesn’t help是固定句型，意为“不能避免……，不能阻止……”。for nations and people striving to assert themselves是状语，for表示“对于”， striving to assert themselves是后置定语，修饰nations and people。

　　【典型例句4】 This week, in the heart of civilized Europe, Slovaks and Hungarians stopped just short of sending in the troops in their contention over a dam on the Danube.
　　【例句分析】本句是一个简单句。主干是Slovaks and Hungarians stopped just short of sending in the troops。this week和in the heart of civilized Europe分别为时间状语和地点状语。in their contention over a dam on the Danube是介词短语做状语，修饰sending。
　　【例句译文】本周，在文明的欧洲腹地，斯洛伐克人和匈牙利人就因争夺多瑙河上的一处水坝而差点动用了军队。
　　【典型例句5】 Proper, scientific study of the impacts of dams and of the cost and benefits of controlling water can help to resolve these conflicts.
　　【例句分析】本句的主干是Proper, scientific study can help to resolve these conflicts。of the impacts of dams和of the cost and benefits of controlling water都是of后置定语，修饰impacts。
　　【例句译文】对水坝的影响以及控水成本和收益进行恰当科学的研究有助于解决这些冲突。
