Surnames, as easy as ZYX(姓氏:字母排序的歧视)。
1】This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.
This refers to discrimination。for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage是状语,其中的as yet unaware of such a disadvantage做后置定语,修饰those。against those whose … alphabet做后置定语,修饰discrimination;其中包含whose引导的定语从句,修饰those。
2】It has long been known that a taxi firm called AAAA cars has a big advantage over Zodiac cars when customers thumb through their phone directories.
It has long been known that a taxi firm has a big advantage over Zodiac cars,其中It是形式主语,that引导主语从句。
3】Thus the American president and vice-president have surnames starting with B and C respectively; and 26 of George Bush’s predecessors (including his father) had surnames in the first half of the alphabet against just 16 in the second half.
分句1的主干是the American president and vice-president have surnames。starting with B and C respectively做后置定语,修饰surnames;分句2的主干是26 of George Bush’s predecessors (including his father) had surnames,in the first half of the alphabet是地点状语,against just 16 in the second half是比较状语。
4】The world’s three top central bankers (Greenspan, Duisenberg and Hayami) are all close to the top of the alphabet, even if one of them really uses Japanese characters. As are the world’s five richest men (Gates, Buffett, Allen, Ellison and Albrecht).
The world’s three top central bankers are all close to the top of the alphabet。 As在第二句中,作为替代词(替代close to the top of the alphabet)出现,置于句首要采用完全倒装,表示“也是如此”的意思。
5】One theory, dreamt up in all the spare time enjoyed by the alphabetically disadvantaged, is that the rot sets in early.
One theory is that the rot sets in early,其中that引导表语从句。dreamt up in all the spare time做后置定语,修饰theory;enjoyed by the alphabetically disadvantaged做后置定语,修饰time。
6】Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees: all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through them.
Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees tend to be drawn up alphabetically,all是同位语;分句2的主干是their recipients lose interest,as引导时间状语从句。
