考研英语（一）长难句解析—2006年阅读Text1

　　本文选自1999年8月29日Newsweek上一篇名为It Is A Bad Time For Jeremiahs的文章，是对Is America Breaking Apart这本书的评论，主要讨论了美国社会的民族同化这一问题。全文中在长难句方面，难度并不是非常大。作为2006年考研英语试卷的第一篇阅读，句子难度虽然较前面题型有所提升，但是仍处于中级难度。阅读做题时只需静下心来，再辅之以词汇和语法基础，即可理解和解题。下面就其中的典型例句进行分析：

　　【难点点拨】：absorbed：专注于，沉浸于; launch：发起，启动;department store：百货商店;vast arrays of：大量的，各种各样的;
　　【例句释义】：人们专注于由19世纪的百货商店所发起的一场“消费文化”，这些商店在高贵的环境中提供各种各样的商品。
　　【典型例句2】：Hence the description of America as a “graveyard” for language.
　　【例句解析】：本句主干为Hence the description，其中hence强调结果，因此为了在句子中更快的出现结果而省略了there is。of America as a “graveyard” for language是介词短语作后置定语修饰description。
　　【难点点拨】：graveyard：坟墓;
　　【例句释义】：因此，有人把美国描述为语言的“坟墓”。
　　【典型例句3】：Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics “have higher rates of intermarriage than do U.S.-born whites and blacks.
　　【例句解析】：本句主干为Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics “have higher rates of intermarriage。than do U.S.-born whites and blacks是由than引导的比较状语从句，采用全部倒装结构，do代替前文中出现的have rates of intermarriage。
　　【难点点拨】：Hispanics：拉美裔美国人;intermarriage：异族通婚;
　　【例句释义】：在国外出生的亚裔和拉美裔移民的异族通婚率相比美国本土白人和黑人的而言要更高。
　　【典型例句4】：Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet “some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation’s assimilative power.”
　　【例句解析】：本句主干为Rodriguez notes that children are fans of superstars, yet “some Americans fear that immigrants remain somehow immune to the nation’s assimilative power，是由yet连接的两个并列句，其中都包含由that引导的宾语从句。in remote villages around world是介词短语作后置定语，修饰children。like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks属同位语，解释superstars。living within the United States是现在分词短语作后置定语，修饰immigrants。
　　【难点点拨】：immune：免疫的，不受…影响的;assimilative：通话的;
　　【例句释义】： 罗德里格斯认为，住在世界各地偏远村庄的孩子们现在都是阿诺•施瓦辛格和加斯•布鲁克斯等超级明星的粉丝，但是“有些美国人仍担心，生活在美国的移民仍莫名其妙地不受这个国家同化力的影响”。
　　【典型例句5】：But particularly when viewed against America’s turbulent past, today’s social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.
　　【例句解析】：本句主干为But today’s social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment。particularly when viewed against America’s turbulent past是由when引导的时间状语从句，省略主语。
　　【难点点拨】：turbulent：混乱的;indices：指数;deteriorating：恶化的;
　　【例句释义】：但是，特别是与美国动荡的过去相比，如今各项社会指标几乎显示不出美国社会正处于一个黑暗和恶化的环境之中。
　　总之，由于本文中对于后置定语、定语从句、状语从句等知识点考查较多，因此对此大家课下需要多多复习。此外，如果时间充足的话，可以多读一些外国核心期刊文章，如《经济学人》、《新闻周刊》等，积累英语国家新闻中常用到的表达。
