本文选自2011年7月5日的New Scientist 《新科学家》，原文标题是How Computers Can Cure Cultural Diabetes (电脑如何治愈文化糖尿病)。本文是一篇新书摘要，名为 The Secret Between Downloading and Uploading: Tales of the Computer as Culture Machine 《上传和下载之间的秘密战争：电脑作为文化机器的故事》 文章主要讨论如何利用电脑提供的便利进行创作。作者认为被动的下载模式不可取，鼓励人们主动参与信息的创作与共享。下面就其中典型例句进行分析：
　　【典型例句1】：The second half of the 20th century saw a collection of geniuses, warriors, entrepreneurs and visionaries labor to create a fabulous machine that could function as a typewriter and printing press, studio and theater, paintbrush and gallery, piano and radio, the mail as well as the mail carrier.
　　【例句解析】：本句中有 see sb do sth 这个结构，主语是“The second half of the 20th century” 宾语是 “a collection of geniuses, warriors, entrepreneurs and visionaries” ;句子剩余部分是宾补;其中有that 引导定语从句，that做主语，从句虽然比较长，但都是一些由and 和 as well as 连接起来的并列成分。

　　【典型例句2】：Not only did they develop such a device but by the turn of the millennium they had also managed to embed it in a worldwide system accessed by billions of people every day.
　　【例句解析】：本句是由not only 引导的部分倒装句，but also部分不用倒装，其中by the turn of the millennium是插入的时间状语;accessed by... 是过去分词做定语修饰a worldwide system;
　　【难点点拨】：managed to do sth. 成功做某事;embed “嵌入”的意思;worldwide system“全球系统” ;
　　【例句释义】：他们不仅仅发明了这个设备，在跨入千禧年之际，他们还成功地将它嵌入到一个每天都有亿万用户访问的全球系统中。
　　【典型例句3】：The networked computer is an amazing device, the first media machine that serves as the mode of production, means of distribution, site of reception, and place of praise and critique.
　　【例句解析】：本句中，第一个逗号之前是主系表的句子结构，the first media machine that ....做同位语从句，解释说明 an amazing device, 其中 that 引导的定语从句，that做主语，其中有4个名词+of+名词的并列结构作 as的宾语，A of B的结构，在这里，B表示A所具有的属性。
　　【难点点拨】：serve 具有...的功能或发挥...的作用;
　　【例句释义】：联网电脑是一台绝妙的设备，它是第一台同时具有生产方式、传播手段、接收端、承载表扬和批评的媒介工具。
　　【典型例句4】： This is because the networked computer has sparked a secret war between downloading and uploading—between passive consumption and active creation—whose outcome will shape our collective future in ways we can only begin to imagine.
　　【例句解析】：本句中，有because 引导的表语从句，其中between是介词短语做状语，破折号起解释说明的作用，即... ;whose 引导定语从句，whose做定语，其中in ways 后是省略了that的定语从句;
　　【难点点拨】：spark：激起战火;whose做定语，可以理解为....的;shape：塑造
　　【例句释义】：因为联网电脑已经引发了一场在下载和上传——即被动消费和主动创造之间的秘密战争。这场战争的结果用一种我们刚开始想像的方式去塑造我们共同的未来。
　　【典型例句5】： Even after the advent of widespread social media, a pyramid of production remains, with a small number of people uploading material, a slightly larger group commenting on or modifying that content, and a huge percentage remaining content to just consume.
　　【例句解析】：本句中，even引导让步状语从句到第一个逗号，即使...，其中of短语修饰advent，可以理解为...的到来或出现;with 引导伴随状语到句末;
　　【难点点拨】：a pyramid of production : 生产金字塔;and 根据句意在这里表示转折;content adj. 满足
　　【例句释义】：即使有了大众社交媒介的广泛出现，生产金字塔仍然存在——只有很少的人去上传资料，稍多的人评论或者修改资料;而大多数人只是安于消费。
　　这是一道七选五的新题型，难度比较大。考生需要理清每段之间以及相应的语段、语句之间的联系，同时还要把握好文章的整体内容，排除两个不相关的选项。文章内容理解起来也稍微抽象一些，不过其话题与社会生活息息相关，仔细理解问题也不大; 从句子难度来看，有些句子由于并列成分比较多，所以句子很长，有些句子结构稍复杂一些，需要划分句子主干以及修饰成分。总之，新题型总体的阅读难度要高于传统阅读，做这道题一定要具备良好的阅读基础，但是这道题目根据段落之间的一些提示词语可以巧妙地做出选择。
