shared直译为“分享的东西”。整个主语直译为“从分享的东西中过滤出独特的东西”就很生硬。可以理解“分享的东西”就是一些“共同的东西”，进而引申为“共性”;“独特的东西”就可以是“个性，个别因素”。所以，这里可以翻译为：将个别因素从共性中剔除，或者“剔除个性，找到共性”。
        　　2) what guides it in evolutionary or cognitive
terms是understand所带的第二个宾语从句。注意in…terms，是一个固定短语，是“在...方面，从...角度来看”的意思。evolutionary是“进化”的意思;cognitive是“认知”的意思。其次，代词it指代的是behaviour，指这种行为。所以翻译为：从进化或认知的角度看，是什么引导这种行为的发展。
