    　　Tornado and hailstorm
    Almost 100 people lost their lives and nearly 800 were injured when a
tornado and hailstorm hit Jiangsu province last week. Xinhua reported that the
tornado struck near Yancheng around 2:30 pm on June 23. It destroyed houses,
*flattened trees and *flipped cars. Tornadoes are not common in China, and many
victims were caught unaware. The heavy *casualties were partly caused by the
lack of underground *bunkers and early warning systems.
    据新华社报道，6月23日下午2点30分左右，江苏省盐城地区遭遇龙卷风冰雹灾害，造成近100人遇难，800人受伤。龙卷风冰雹摧毁房屋、压倒树木、掀翻车辆。龙卷风在我国并不常见，很多受害者都没有充分的准备。造成严重人员伤亡的部分原因在于缺乏地下掩体以及早期预警系统。
