    2003年第3篇第12句 It's a theory to which many economists subscribe, but in
practice it often leaves railroads in the positionof determining which companies
will flourish and which will fail.

        结构：
    It's a theory(主句) //to which many economists
subscribe(which定语从句，to介词前置，是subscribe to), //but in practice it often leaves
railroadsin the position of determining(but连接的并列句) //which companies wil
lflourish and which will fail(which company…and
which…是并列的宾语从句，做动名词determining的宾语).

    这是一个许多经济学家都赞成的理论，但实际上，它常常将铁路置于决定一家公司兴衰的关键地位。
    翻译思路：leave sb. inthe position of…
    这句话有一个leaves railroads in the position of…，上一句话有一个leaving remaining
customers to
shoulder…。这两个结构都相同，都是动词leave后面跟宾语，再跟补足语的现象。这里的leave有“使，让”的意思，整个句型意思差不多：使某人做某事。
