1. Creating a “European identity” that respects the different cultures and traditions which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.

【译文】 不同文化和传统组成了连接欧洲大陆的纽带。创造一个尊重这些文化和传统的“欧洲统一认同”绝非易事，需要战略性选择。
【析句】 本句的主干为Creating a “European identity”…is no easy task and demands a strategic choice,that引导的限制性定语从句修饰前面的“European identity”,在这个定语从句中又包含which 引导的限制性定语从句，修饰前面的 cultures and traditions，主语带有由连词and 连接的两个谓语动词“is no easy task”和“demands a strategic choice”,翻译本句时应注意定语从句的处理方法。
【讲词】 the Old Continent（或the Old World）指欧洲大陆，以区别于the New World（美洲）。
fabric意为“织品,织物,布；结构”。
The whole fabric of society was changed by the revolution.（整个社会结构都被这场革命改变了。）
identity意为“认同”，政治、社会、历史、文化等学科的同学应该都清楚这个概念。
