　　各位考生，大家生活在科技昌明的时代，估计从小玩的玩具中就有遥控直升机，然而在三十几年前的时候，直升机还是一个新鲜，高科技的玩意儿，没有多少人见过或听说过(对比一下现在别说屏幕上常见，中小城市的警察局都会有那么一两架直升机)，那个时候的菜鸟们怎么了解这个高级货呢?且看下文。
　　第一段：
　　For centuries men dreamed of achieving vertical flight.
　　翻译：数百年来人们梦想能够垂直飞行。
　　讲解：achieve：取得;获得;实现;成功;如愿以偿。vertical：垂直的。
　　In 400 A.D. Chinese children played with a fan-like toy that spun upwards and fell back to earth as rotation ceased.
　　翻译：公元400年左右，中国儿童玩一种像电风扇似的玩具。这种玩具会旋转飞上天空，当旋转停止时就会落回地面。
　　讲解：spun：旋转，动词。rotation：旋转，名词。
　　Leonardo da Vinci conceive the first mechanical apparatus, called a “Helix,” which could carry man straight up, but was only a design and was never tested.
　　翻译：达芬奇构思了第一架叫做“Helix”的机械装置，它能够把人载入高空，但这只是一个设计，从来没有验证过。
　　讲解：conceive：构思，构想。
　　The ancient-dream was finally realized in 1940 when a Russian engineer piloted a strange looking craft of steel tubing with a rotating fan on top.
　　翻译：1940年一位俄国工程师最终实现了这个古老的梦想，他驾驶一架看起来很奇怪的飞行器，机身是个钢制的粗管，上端有旋转的扇叶。
　　讲解：pilot：作动词时表示驾驶。
　　It rose awkwardly and vertically into the air from a standing start, hovered a few feet above the ground, went sideways and backwards, and then settled back to earth.
　　翻译：这个飞行器从站立的地方笨拙地向空中垂直升起，在离地面几英尺高的地盘旋，向旁边并向后移动，然后降落到地上。
　　The vehicle was called a helicopter. Imaginations were fired. Men dreamed of going to work in their own personal helicopters.

　　讲解：vehicle：汽车，飞行器，运载工具。
　　People anticipate that vertical flight transports would carry millions of passengers as do the airliners of today. Such fantastic expectations were not fulfilled.
　　翻译：人们预测这种垂直飞行运输工具会像现在的飞机一样能运送百万计的旅客。这种奇异的愿望未被实现。

　　The helicopter has now become an extremely useful machine.
　　翻译：直升机现在成了一种极其有用的工具。
　　It excels in military missions, carrying troops, guns and strategic instruments where other aircraft cannot go.
　　翻译：它擅长执行军事任务，能往其他飞行器到不了的地方运送部队，枪支和战略性物资。
　　讲解：excel in：擅长于。已经连着1986年，1987年考两次了。
　　Corporations use them as airborne offices, many metropolitan areas use them in police work, construction and logging companies employ them in various advantageous ways, engineers use them for site selection and surveying, and oil companies use them as the best way to make offshore and remote work stations accessible to crews and supplies.
　　翻译：一些公司利用直升机作为空中办公室，许多大都市利用直升机执行公安任务，建筑和伐木公司利用直升机做各种有用的工作，工程师利用直升机来选择地点和勘察，石油公司利用直升机作为联络和补给离岸的和偏僻的工作站最好的方式。
　　讲解：airborne：空运的;空气传播的。advantageous：有利的。这句话貌似很长，其实是个排比句，讲了在各行各业直升机的用途。
　　Any urgent mission to a hard-to-get-to place is a likely task for a helicopter.
　　翻译：任何位置难以到达的地方发生的紧急任务，直升机都可能完成。
　　Among their other multitude of used: deliver people across town, fly to and from airports, assist in rescue work, and aid in the search for missing or wanted persons.
　　翻译：直升机的其他多种用途包括：跨城镇运送人员，来往于机场，协助救援工作，协助寻找失联人员或逃犯。
　　讲解：multitude：multi(多)+itude(抽象名词后缀)→多，大量;群众，人群。
