          1. Nowadays, any Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car—if he or she can afford it. Having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can drop off the children at school on the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains do not go, and so you can find a quiet scenic spot with no crowds.
          2. However, there are drawbacks to owning a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey to work more of a nightmare than a dream. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, as the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the prices you have to pay for a license and insurance coverage.
          3. However, the manager must be aware that he is seeing only the best side of the prospective employee and, as the saying goes, appearances can be deceptive. For instance, that smart new suit that the interviewee is wearing might have been hired from a tailor shop, or lent to him by his brother. In addition, the brief interview does not allow the manager to observe how well—or how badly—the interviewee might get along with his future colleagues.
          4. First of all, the private car is a symbol of freedom. It enables an individual or a family to travel anywhere at any time, without relying on public transport. It is convenient for shopping and transporting children to and from school. Moreover, in the case of illness, it can carry its owner or other sick person to hospital without delay.
          5. However, too many private cars can lead to traffic jams, thus slowing down life and work rather than speeding it up. In addition, automobiles are major polluters of the atmosphere. And, last but not least, the more cars there are on the roads, the more traffic accidents occur.
          6. Most people would agree that there can be no substitute for the traditional classroom. Friends of mine who have tried to study television or e?mail courses have found that they miss the personal approach of the teacher. They say that it takes a long time to get their questions answered, and the courses are not geared to the needs of the individual student.
          7. Another attraction about studying in a classroom is that you are surrounded by people of roughly the same interests and abilities as yourself. I find that I think best when I am challenged by other people. This cannot happen when you are alone at home, glued to a computer screen or a television set.

          8. Moreover, one of the advantages of college life is that you get to leave home and meet all kinds of interesting people from many different places. To my mind, this is just as much part of education as studying. After all, meeting someone over a computer is not very exciting at all.
          9. The advances made in the electronic media recently have made the traditional classroom obsolete. In fact, you can learn more from the Internet and educational courses on TV than you can at school. In addition, think of how much time you would save if your classroom is right in your own home.
          10. Studying at home has other advantages, too. For instance, in your own home you are free from the distractions which come from having other students around you. Furthermore, your ability to learn is not dependent on the competence and whims of a teacher.
          11. Many people claim that the recent advances made in the electronic media are making the traditional school classroom obsolete. They say that, with the Internet and a wide range of educational courses available via television at home nowadays, there is no need to waste time making tiring journeys to school. Besides, they assert that a person studies better in the familiar surroundings of his or her home.
          12. This may be so, but it must be pointed out that studying at home also has its drawbacks. For instance, it can be difficult to concentrate on one?s studies when one is continually disturbed by visitors, telephone calls and urgent household chores. In addition, many people do not have the self?discipline to spend lone hours immersed in study; without the company of fellow students, their minds soon begin to wander.
