考研英语(一)长难句解析系列——1998年阅读Text4

　　本文主要讲述第二次世界大战后，美国人口向南部和西部迁移。全文中在长难句方面，难度较小，从句嵌套较少。下面就其中的典型例句进行分析：
　　【典型例句1】：Emerging from the 1980 census is the picture of a nation developing more and more regional competition, as population growth in the Northeast and Midwest reaches a near standstill.
　　【例句解析】：句子主干是Emerging from the 1980 census is…。of a nation developing more and more regional competition介词短语作后置定语，修饰the picture。as引导从句表伴随。
　　【难点点拨】：census：人口普查;standstill：静止，停顿
　　【例句释义】：1980年美国人口普查显示出这样一幅图像：随着东北部和中西部人口增长近乎停止，地区间的竞争越来越激烈了。
　　【典型例句2】：This development -- and its strong implications for US politics and economy in years ahead -- has enthroned the South as America’s most densely populated region for the first time in the history of the nation’s head counting.
　　【例句解析】：句子主干是This development…has enthroned…。破折号补充说明主语this development。for the first time in the history作状语。of the nation’s head counting介词短语作后置定语，修饰history。
　　【难点点拨】：implication：含义，影响;enthrone：使登基;densely：密集地;
　　populate：居住于，构成…的人口(总数);head counting：人口统计
　　【例句释义】：这一发展—以及它对今后几年美国政治和经济的强大影响—使南部在美国人口普查史上第一次成为人口最密集的地区。
　　【典型例句3】：Nonstop waves of immigrants played a role, too -- and so did bigger crops of babies as yesterday’s “baby boom” generation reached its child bearing years.
　　【例句解析】：句子主干是Nonstop waves of immigrants played a role。and表并列，连接前后两个分句。第二个分句的主句是倒装形式，还原过来是bigger crops of babies played a role, too。因为前面已经提到played a role, too。为了简洁，后面用so引导。as引导状语从句。
　　【难点点拨】：nonstop：不断的;immigrants：移民;child bearing：生育
　　【例句释义】：不断涌入的移民潮，还有以前“生育高峰”出生的那些孩子也已经到了生育年龄，这些都发挥着作用。
　　【典型例句4】：Often they chose -- and still are choosing -- somewhat colder climates such as Oregon, Idaho and Alaska in order to escape smog, crime and other plagues of urbanization in the Golden State.
　　【例句解析】：句子主干是Often they chose…somewhat colder climates…。破折号补充说明谓语动词chose。such as表列举。in order to引导表目的短语。of urbanization介词短语作后置定语，修饰other plagues。
　　【难点点拨】：smog：烟雾;plague：灾祸，麻烦;urbanization：城市化，都市化
　　【例句释义】：他们常常选择——现在依然这样选择——一些气候较冷的地区，如俄勒冈、爱达荷和阿拉斯加，为的是躲开“金州”(加利福尼亚)的烟雾、犯罪和其他城市化进程中的问题。
　　【典型例句5】：As a result, California’s growth rate dropped during the 1970s, to 18.5 percent -- little more than two thirds the 1960s’ growth figure and considerably below that of other Western states.
　　【例句解析】：句子主干是California’s growth rate dropped…。As a result作状语。破折号补充说明宾语。below后面的that代替growth rate。of other Western states介词结构作后置定语，修饰that(growth rate)。
　　【难点点拨】：considerably：相当地，非常地
　　【例句释义】：结果，加利福尼亚的人口增长率在70年代降到了18.5%——略高于60年代增长率的2/3，但大大低于西部其他各州。
　　总之，本篇阅读并未考查高频考点，如定语从句，状语从句，反而考查到大家所不熟悉的倒装用法。倒装句型对一部分考生来说或许是盲区，考生需注意。Of介词结构作后置定语的用法也频繁考查，考生需熟练掌握运用。课余时间，考生可阅读美国西部迁移背景文章，此类背景文章经常出现在阅读文章中，熟悉背景有利于提高阅读速度和正确率。
