Dear Wang Ming,
I feel awfully sorry indeed that you have been ill for a couple of days. I have learned from your roommate that you are recovering well and that you will go out of hospital within three days. I am really relieved to know this exciting news.
In the following few days I sincerely hope you should take a good rest, have an excellent state of mind, and follow the doctor’s advice strictly. Just take it easy and don’t worry about the study. I shall help you make up the content you have missed while you are in hospital.
With the best wishes for your quick and complete recovery.
Yours ever
Li Hong

As is vividly depicted in the drawing, a mother reminds her daughter to make some preparations for the interview. However, the daughter answers by saying that she is making up for it. It is apparent that she expects to impress the interviewer by her appearances, which is contrary to her mother’s. Simply designed as this drawing seems to be, the phenomenon it subtly indicates is pervasive in our community.
What the painter conveys is that currently folks, especially young girls, pay too much attention to their looks when hunting for jobs. There is an increasing cult for outer beauty but our individuals ignore the pursuit of inner beauty such as ability and knowledge.
A couple of reasons can account for this strange trend. To begin with, interviews have become important means for judging a qualified applicant. Interviewers will be influenced consciously or unconsciously by what interviewee look and wear. In addition, girls in great numbers tend to worship their appearances, convinced that beautiful features and dresses will help them succeed in their life. Some girls even go to have surgical operations to look prettier before graduation. Last but not the least, many beauty competitions give rise to the illusion that beautiful looks can help them become famous, successful and wealthy so easily.
In my personal sense, what counts most for us in life is knowledge and ability. It is essential for us to be clean, neat, and good-mannered in jobhunting. Too heavy make-up will merely produce negative effects on interviews. Too much concern about appearances can solely bring about harmful consequences. Only by constantly improving our capability and enriching our knowledge can we succeed in achieving what we desire. |
