在2008年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试，英语完型填空的部分有这样一段话

这段话的第一句The idea that some groups of people may be more intelligent than others is one of those hypotheses that dare not speak its name. 这句话在说，人虽有聪明的和没有那么聪明之分的，但这却不太好说出口。不好说出口的原因可能是怕政治不正确，也可能是违背道德，亦或是还没有充分的科学依据。实际上 Oscar Wilde也说到过非常相似的依据话”love that dare not speak its name ， 字面意思“不能说出名字的爱”。这句话最初是出自 Lord Alfred Douglas一首名为Two Love 的一首诗，之后， Oscar Wilde在为自己辩护时也提到过。
Oscar Wilde (奥斯卡·王尔德)，是19 世纪爱尔兰最伟大的作家与艺术家之一，以其剧作，诗歌、童话和小说闻名。虽然我们大多数人并不熟悉这个作家，但是他说过的一些话，我们可能并不陌生。比如，We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.我们都生活在阴沟里，但仍友人仰望星空。What is the chief cause of divorce?Marriage 什么是离婚的主要原因?结婚。The heart was made to be broken.心就是用来碎的。Ridicule is the tribute paid to the genius by the mediocrities.奚落是庸才对天才的颂歌。除了文学造诣，他与 Lord Alfred Douglas的关系，成为社会批判他的原因。当时社会Lord Alfred Douglas与Oscar Wilde 的关系是同性恋的关系，是违背社会的伦理道德的，是不能被认可和接受的，因此也就不会给这种关系正名，名不正则言不顺，所以这种love 是one that dare not speak its name 的。而Oscar Wilde 并不认为这中关系是同性恋，在审判的过程中，他给出了自己的解释：
“The love that dare not speak its name” in this century is such a great affection of an elder for a younger man as there was between David and Jonathan, such as Plato made the very basis of his philosophy ... It is that deep, spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect … It is beautiful, it is fine, it is the noblest form of affection. There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an elder and a younger man, when the elder man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him.“
在Oscar Wilde看来，他对Lord Alfred Douglas的爱(或者喜爱)是非常正常的(nothing unnatural about it)，而且爱的是他的活力，生命力(joy,hope and glamour of life)，是精神上的( intellectual)。 尽管如此，社会还是不认同Oscar Wilde的解释，是有悖于社会伦理道德的，不会被主流社会认可与接收，这种爱，即使存在，也是不能说出口的，所以是love that dare not speak its name。
