The decision of the New York Philharmonic to hire Alan Gilbert as its next music director has been the talk of the classical-music world ever since the sudden announcement of his appointment in 2009. For the most part, the response has been favorable, to say the least. “Hooray! At last!” wrote Anthony Tommasini, a sober-sided classical-music critic.
Philharmonic“爱乐乐团”；hire sb. as...“雇佣某人担任...”；ever since“自从”；sudden“突然的”；announcement“宣布”；appointment“任命”。首句貌似复杂，实则不然，去掉所有修饰限定和补充说明，主干部分就是The decision has been the talk“决定成为了话题”。for the most part“在极大程度上”；response“回应”；favorable“赞成的”；to say the least“至少可以这样说”；hooray“万岁”；sober-sided可以表示“以严肃著称的”；critic“评论家”。
One of the reasons why the appointment came as such a surprise, however, is that Gilbert is comparatively little known. Even Tommasini, who had advocated Gilbert’s appointment in the Times, calls him “an unpretentious musician with no air of the formidable conductor about him.” As a description of the next music director of an orchestra that has hitherto been led by musicians ..., that seems likely to have struck at least some Times readers as faint praise.
