　　严复的直属上司李鸿章时任直隶总督，且得到慈禧的倚重，专门处理洋务，但 他并不能借助李鸿章的支持而得以在官场上一展所长。不过，严复认定是因为自 己“不由科举出身当日仕进，最重科举，故所言每不见听，欲博一第入都，以与 当轴周旋”。所以严复曾钻研八股文，且从1885年至1894年的9年中，曾4次参加乡试，却始终未第，这无疑是严复一生的大憾事。他曾有诗:“当年误习旁行书，举世相视如夷蛮”。虽然他在甲午后思想有所改变，不在尝试走科举之路， 甚至大力抨击八股文， 并决定通过翻译西学救国，但是由于他在官场中的地位不高，不得不借助外部力量，加强自己的影响。
