Two men have been arrested in connection with a telecom fraud case in east
China’s Shandong Province, believed to have led to the death of a teenager,
local police said Friday.
The case came to public attention Friday following widespread media reports
of the death of Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old high school graduate in Linyi City.
Xu was reported to have lost 9,900 yuan (1,490 US dollars) of her
university tuition fees to telecom fraudsters and, according to reports, died of
a cardiac arrest on Aug. 19.
Just a few miles away, another student, Song Zhenning, was also reported to
have died in the same way, having lost money in another fraud case.
A third similar incident has also been reported in the city.
The Linyi publicity department said Friday in a post on its official Sina
Weibo account that police are also investigating a similar case, in which a
21-year-old university student died of a heart attack Tuesday after being conned
out of his savings.
Song Zhenning, a sophomore at the Shandong University of Technology from
Linshu county, Linyi, died suddenly on Tuesday morning after being defrauded by
a phone scammer of 2,000 yuan ($300) a few days earlier, the Beijing Times
reported Friday.
According to the Beijing Times, Song received a call from an unfamiliar
number and the person on the line, who claimed to be a police officer, told Song
his credit card was overdrawn by 60,000 yuan. Song, who believed the caller was
legitimate after the scammer read out Song’s bank card number, then transferred
2,000 yuan to the stranger’s bank account.
"In those cases, the suspects all provided accurate information about the
victims, such as their enrollment information or the bank account number, which
means some departments might be connected with the criminal parties," Zhu
Xiaoding, a Beijing-based lawyer, said Friday.
Tian Zumeng from the Education Ministry said that university students
should be alert to such fraud "and do not take it for granted that someone told
you to provide your bank account and passwords."
"Justice and administrative departments should, in solving these cases,
investigate thoroughly and call criminals to account," Zhu said.
