1、Now since the assessment of intelligence is acomparative matter
we must be sure that the scalewith which we are comparing our subjects provides
a"valid" or "fair" comparison.
【分析】
多重复合句。since引导原因状语从句，主句主干为we mustbe sure that…，that引导宾语从句。宾语从句主干为
thescale…provides a “valid” or “fair”
comparison，其中又包含一个which引导的定语从句修饰限制scale。翻译时，which引导的定语从句可译作scale
的前置定语，也可译作汉语的时间状语。
【译文】
既然对智力的评估是比较而言的，那么我们必须确保，在对我们的对象进行比较时，我们所使用的尺度能提供“有效的”或“耸平的”比较。
2、The first two must be equal for ail who are being compared, if
any comparison in terms ofintelligence is to be made.
【分析】
复合句。句子主干为the first two must be equal; for all who are being compared
为介词结构作状语，其中who引导定语从句修饰all;if引导条件状语从句，in terms of intelligence 作comparison 的后置定语，
be to do表将来。翻译时，按照汉语表达习惯，条件状语从句应置子句首，同时原句的被动语态转换为汉语的主动语态;状语for all…也应译于主句前。
【点拨】
1、the first two需明确化，指“前两个因素”。2、in terms of“在…方面;根据，依据;用…措辞”。
【译文】
如果要在智力方面进行任何比较的话，那么对所有被比较的人来说，前两个因素必须是相同的。
3、There is more agreement on the kinds of behaviorreferred to by
the term than there is on how tointerpret or classify them.
【分析】
复合句。句子主干为一个There be句型，使用了more...than结构。翻译时，可以按照汉语的表达习惯调整原句的语序，不使用there
be句型，而是增补句子的逻辑主语“人们”，同时把agreement转译作动词，moreagreement on…than
on…即可译为“对…的看法比对…的看法更为一致”。referred to by the term 作 thekinds of behavior

【分析】
简单句。句子主干为To criticise it is…comparable to criticising a thermometer，其中使用了
becomparable to结构。两个for引导的结构均作原因状语。 翻译时，整句话可采取顺译法。
【点拨】
1、it指代“智力测验”，such failure指代“不能测试孩子的性格”，翻译时均需明确。2、be
comparableto“比得上;犹如”。
【译文】
批评智力测验不能测试孩子的性格等情况，犹如批评温度计不能测试风速一样。
