Retreat to the mountainside this summer

    While summers are hot in the city, you can find some respite in the mountains. They offer rivers and trees that create cool retreat away from the unbearable heat. Here are some getaways to mountains near Beijing, Shanghai and elsewhere.
Beijing
Miaofengshan Mountain
A famous Buddhist resort, temperature at Miaofengshan Mountain is usually 8 degrees Celsius lower than the city.
Near the parking lot, there is a teahouse, called Jitianle, which offers tourists a place to take a short rest before starting their pilgrimage. This teahouse boasts a traditional Chinese courtyard, the center of which stands a wisteria tree, creating a typical scenario in old Chinese farmhouses. There are seats along its winding hallways where visitors can sample fresh rose flowers skullcap tea, which is a specialty of Miaofengshan Mountain. The tea is free of charge and tourists just need to pay for the seat.
The temple that sits on Miaofengshan Mountain is called Niangniangmiao Temple, which is said helps couples who wish for a son. But if you are not there to ask for a bundle of joy, you can pray for good fortune by buying some incense for 10 yuan.
On weekends, Miaofengshan Mountain also holds ceremonies to distribute free green bean rice porridge, which is soft and tastes good.

How to get there: Take Fushilu and head west until you reach Shimenlu. Go along the road and take a left turn at Sanjiadian. Continue on and thentake 109 National Way to Longquan Hotel. It will lead you to the entrance of Danlicun Village, then take a right turn and go ahead to reach Miaofengshan Mountain Scenic Resort.
Lingshan Mountain
Crowned as the highest mountain in outskirts of Beijing, Lingshan Mountain has an average temperature of 12 degrees Celsius lower than downtown Beijing. And the top of the mountain is covered with snow all year round.
Despite the extreme heat in downtown Beijing, Lingshan Mountain is having its springtime now. Meadows thrive with green grass, languid white sheep wander across the meadow, and you can see outlines of distant mountains in the clear sky.
At night tourists may camp on the soft meadow enjoying a sweet sleep rarely seen in the hot summer. A dark blue sky studded with shining stars may come as a bonus. Just remember to take some thick clothes to keep warm in the cool air and some mosquito-repellent to avoid bites.
A Tibetan folklore festival is currently going on at Lingshan Mountain featuring Tibetan style singing, dancing as well as bonfire parties.
Ticket: 35 yuan How to get there: Take Fushilu and head west until you reach Sanjiadian, Mentougou District. Then take 109 National Way and continue west, passing Yanchizhen, Qijiazhuang and Hongshuikoucun village to reach the entrance of Lingshan Mountain Scenic Resort.
Baihuashan Mountain
Boasting the third highest peak outside of Beijing, Baihuashan Mountain is a nice cool retreat with winding creeks and dense vegetation, which make the temperature here on average 10 degrees Celsius lower than downtown Beijing.
Baihuashan has also won acclaim as the “best forest bath” in a Beijing suburb. The Forest here is dominated by various pine trees, like larch and Chinese pine, an the ground is dotted with wild flowers. In fact, the mountain’s name Baihuashan in Chinese literally means a mountain boasting hundreds of flowers.
Apart from the numerous creeks, Baihuashan also has a famous waterfall that’s 150 meters tall. The water crashing down below creates a huge roar and the sound reverberates among the trees making it sound even bigger. The waterfall viewing spot is built so close to the waterfall that when tourists stand there, they can even feel the cool mist.
Currently an outdoor concert featuring Chinese ethnic songs is on at Baihuashan on weekends and it will last until August 13.
Ticket: 30yuan How to get there: Take Fushilu and head west until you reach Shuangyuhuandao, Mentougou District. Then take 109 National Way and go west for about 100 kilometers until you arrive at Baihuashan Mountain Scenic Resort.
    Shanghai Yandangshan Mountain
As water always brings cool relief in summer, Yandangshan’s seaside location makes it an ideal retreat for many travelers. Yandangshan Mountain is located in the northeast coast of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, bordering the East China Sea.
Yandangshan is a famous resort in China. Ever since Ming Dynasty it has been nicknamed the “famous Mountain by the sea" and boasting "the best scenery in China". In the 1930s, a German geologist wrote about this place, describing this mountain as beautiful as the mountains of Switzerland..
One amazing thing about Yandangshan is that it has a night view as wonderful as daytime. Yandangshan is known for its peaks and rocks of unique shapes. What’s more, their shapes can even change when viewed from different perspectives. One of them, Lingfeng Peak, has a poetic flavor when viewed at night among the fog.
Yandangshan has many ancient caves used for worshipping Buddha in the past. Guanyin Cave and Beidou Cave are the most well-known ones.
The mountain is also blessed with abundant waters in the form of some 30 waterfalls and springs. The biggest among them is Dalongqiu Waterfall with a drop of 197 meters.
How to get there: First arrive in Hangzhou City and don’t leave the expressway. Head towards Ningbo City on the Hangyong Expressway until you reach Guzhu. Then take the Yongtaiwen Expressway and head towards Wenzhou City to reach the entrance of Yandangshan Mountain Scenic Resort.
Putuoshan Mountain
Known as the lowest of China's sacred mountains, Putuoshan Mountain is located on a small island, five kilometers east of Zhoushan island in Zhejiang province. Though small, covering only 12 square kilometers, this small island has mystic caves, tranquil valleys, overhanging cliffs and golden beaches.
Putuoshan Mountain is one of China's oldest Buddha worshipping mountains. Among many temples, there is one named Bukenqu ("Reluctant to Go"), built by a Japanese monk in 916 AD in gratitude of the Goddess who helped him return safely to Japan from Putuoshan. Hsuan Tsang, a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty also visited Putuoshan during his pilgrimage to India.
Besides the temple, Putuoshan also has lush vegetation. Many tourists take a stroll around the mountain or relax at the beach. For gourmets, Putuoshan offers some of China's greatest seafood.
For those not wishing the trek all over the mountain, there is a comprehensive minibus transport system accessing to all the main sights.
How to get there: Ferryboats are available everyday between Putuoshan and Shanghai.
Shanghai-Putuoshan: From Shanghai Shiliepu Harbour near the Bund, the main passenger harbour of Shanghai, there are 8am buses to take you to Luchaogang Harbour where a fast boat to Putuoshan is available. It costs 156 yuan per person for a soft seat on the boat (bus fare included) and the trip takes three and a half hours.
Putuoshan-Shanghai: Take the night boat, which departs from Putuoshan every day at 4:30pm. The boat arrives in Shanghai the next morning around 6am. Second class beds costs 163 yuan.
Moganshan Mountain
Listed as one of the 'Four Best Summer Resorts in China', Moganshan Mountain is located in Deqing County of Huzhou City in northeastern Zhejiang Province. With numerous little springs and waterfalls, Moganshan Mountain has an average temperature of only 24 degrees Celsius.
Moganshan Mountain is famous for three things: wild bamboo, splendid cloud seas and villas of different styles.
Over 200 villas of different architecture, including European, American, Japanese, and Russian have been built on Moganshan Mountain, thus giving it the name 'World Architecture Museum'. Most of the villas were built in the last century and were used by many famous people, such as Chairman Mao, former Chinese premier Zhou Enlai, former Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek, the former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk and Ho Chi Minh, the former Chairman of Vietnam.
In addition, there is a legend of Moganshan that tells the story about a man choosing his career over his lover. As part of the story, there is a not-to-miss scenic spot called Sword Pond. All the locals know the legend well and you can ask them to tell you about it.
How to Get There: If you are in Shanghai, first take a train to Hangzhou. Then take a coach to Huzhou from the Old North Bus Station or the New Passenger Station. With a total journey time of two to three hours, you can get off at Mogan Mountain Stop.
   
    Elsewhere
Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang Ugur Autonomous Region, Northwest China
With a high altitude, Tianshan Mountain, located in Xinjiang Ugur Autonomous Region, offers not only cool weather but also a distinctive minority ethnic flavor with endless meadows and Mongolian tents, which are rarely seen elsewhere.
Tianchi ("holy pond") is Tianshan's most famous scenic spot. It's a crescent-shaped lake of crystal clear water. Tourists can also find some Buddhist relics as well as dense spruce forests, trees of which are all hundreds of years old.
If you travel there, be sure to take long-sleeve shirts as it is rather cool in Tianshan. You can also bring some instant noodles if you are not used to the minority ethic cuisine, which is spicy and mostly consists of mutton dishes.
Wutaishan, Shanxi Province, Central China
Famous for its magnificent temples and history, Wutaishan or "five platform mountain", it was often chosen as the preferred monastic training venue by emperors and aristocrats in ancient China. And today, Wutaishan's doors are open to visitors from around the world. Each of the five main peaks boasts a beautiful and unique view.
Summer in Wutaishan is always raining, so visitors should bring umbrellas or rain coats. If they want to watch the sunrise on top of the Eastern platform, it is a good idea to bring a thick jacket to keep warm.
Lushan,
Jiangxi Province, Central China Villas of various styles are located in Lushan as well as famous scenic spots including the Lushan botanical gardens and a hill town called Nianling. Nianling has Lushan's second largest man-made lake called Xihu.
As a Buddhist holy place, Lushan is home to a number of temples once owned by ancient Chinese emperors and writers. There are also many famous works of calligraphy and stele carvings in various places around the mountain.
Changbaishan, Jilin Province, Northeast China
Translated as "forever white mountain", Changbaishan is a volcano and boasts many unique, beautiful landscapes. On top of its main peak called Baitoushan, or"white head mountain", there are many white fushi or magma rocks, and snow throughout the year. The most famous scenic spot is Tianshan Tianchi, a lake at the mouth of this volcano. The water is clear and as blue as sapphire.
Changbaishan also has a natural museum for rare plants and animals, including ginseng, mink and deer. These are sometimes referred to as the three treasures of Northeast China.
