1. No clear－cut distinction can be drawn between professionals and amateurs in science: exceptions can be found to any rule. Nevertheless,the word “amateur” does carry a connotation that the person concerned is not fully integrated into the scientific community and,in particular,may not fully share its values.
【译文】 在科学领域内，专业与业余之间没有明显的区分：任何规律都有其例外。但是“业余”这个词的确具有某种（特殊的）含义，即相关人员并没有完全融入某个科学群体，尤其是指他们也许并不完全认同这个群体的价值观。
【析句】 第一个句子实际上是因果复合句，主句是No clearcut… in science，后面是一个省略了as的从句，以说明原因。在第二个句子中,nevertheless是转折词，表示上下文语意的转折，其主句是the word “amateur” does carry a connotation，后面跟了一个同位语从句，其中有两个并列的谓语成分。

2. The trend was naturally most obvious in those areas of science based especially on a mathematical or laboratory training,and can be illustrated in terms of the development of geology in the United Kingdom.

【讲词】 illustrate意为“插图，图解，举例说明，阐述”。The book was illustrated with color photographs.（这本书配上了彩色照片。）His story illustrates her true generosity very clearly.（他所说的事很清楚地说明了她确实慷慨大方。）
in terms of是一个常用短语，意为“根据,按照；用……的话,在……方面”。They have tremendous pressure in terms of schooling and employment.（他们在学习和就业方面面临了巨大的压力。）The rural-urban divide is most pressing in terms of infrastructure and public services.（在基础建设和公共服务方面，城乡差距非常大。）
