1. A comparison of British geological publications over the last century and a half reveals not simply an increasing emphasis on the primacy of research,but also a changing definition of what constitutes an acceptable research paper.
【译文】 对过去一个半世纪的英国地质出版物进行比较，我们发现现在不但越来越强调把研究放在首位，而且对什么是可以接受的论文的界定也在不断变化。
【析句】 本句的主语是a comparison… and a half，谓语是reveals，宾语是两个由not simply和but also连接的并列结构，注意宾语emphasis和definition前都有分词来修饰。
【讲词】 在英汉翻译时，应该慎重处理限制性成分，如句中的increasing emphasis，the primacy of research，changing definition，an acceptable research paper。
英语和汉语在表达习惯上的不同。如果拘泥于英语的结构，那么翻译出来的句子就显得生硬，因此在实际翻译过程中应对句子结构进行调整，以符合汉语的表达习惯。

The overall result has been to make entrance to professional geological journals harder for amateurs,a result that has been reinforced by the widespread introduction of refereeing,first by national journals in the nineteenth century and then by several local geological journals in the twentieth century.

本句的理解重点在于理顺句子结构，要看到在第一个逗号之后没有动词了，可以一层一层地把这个名词短语分解开。
【讲词】 entrance意指“入口”，此处指发表文章，进入专业圈子。college entrance examinations（大学升学考试，高考）。entrance to journals指在刊物上发表文章。
reinforce意为“加强,增援,补充”。The news reinforced her hopes.（这个消息增加了她的希望。）Such an event reinforced my conviction that we should get the job done immediately.（这一事件使我坚信，我们应该立即着手完成这一工作。） reinforced concrete意为“钢筋混凝土”。
