1. It doesn't help that building a big,powerful dam has become a symbol of achievement for nations and people striving to assert themselves.
【译文】 对于那些竭力自我显示的国家和人民来说，修建高大雄伟的大坝即是某种成就的象征，然而修建大坝其实并没有多大作用。
【析句】 It doesn't help是全句的主干结构，其中it是形式主语。在真正的主语 that从句中，主语是一个现在分词短语（building a dam）。分词短语striving to assert themselves修饰nations and people。
【讲词】 it helps或it doesn't help是非常口语化的表达方式，前者意为“有所帮助”或“起到作用”，后者意为“帮不上忙”或“不起作用”。It helps to remember that I can always look to your help.（一想到能指着你帮我，实在让我感到宽心。） It doesn't help to have assumed such an attitude.（抱着这种态度没有什么作用。）
assert意为“断言,声称”。I had to assert myself in the meeting in order to ensure acquisition of the new book.（我在会上不得不坚持自己观点以保证得到那本新书。）to assert oneself意为“显示权威；出风头”。You should learn to assert yourself in a healthy manner.（你应该学会以一种健康的方式表现自己。）
