In men, baldness is due mostly to an unlucky roll of the genetic dice. But in women, hair loss appears to be linked much more strongly tolifestyle factors like stress — from divorce or the death of a spouse, for example — according to preliminary findings from two studies.
For the studies, Dr. Bahman Guyuron, a plastic surgeon at Case WesternReserve University, and his colleagues looked at 66 male and 84 femaleidentical twin pairs. Since twins are genetically identical — andprogrammed to have identical hairlines — the researchers knew that anydifferences could be attributed to environmental factors.
"What is amazing is how many of these twins have exactly the samebehaviors, the same things matching except one or two factors thatpossibly may contribute to these differences," Guyuron told WebMD.
Indeed, the researchers found that in women, the strongest predictor ofhair loss was marital status. Women who had lost a spouse were morelikely to have barer pates than their sisters with stable marriages. Thedata also suggested that smoking, a history of skin conditions anddiabetes were also limky"http://kaoyan.koolearn.com/zhuanshuo/mt/" target="_blank">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"s the sun exposure that's to blame).
For the study, Guyuron's team used questionnaires to ask about thesiblings' lifestyles and habits. The researchers also took pictures ofthe participants' scalps, which were assessed by experts. The results ofthe studies must be considered preliminary, since they haven't yet beenpeer-reviewed. They will be presented at the American Society ofPlastic Surgeons' annual meeting in Denver this week.
Thegood news is that some of the lifestyle factors that may contribute tohair loss can be controlled. "In the end, I am a big proponent of theidea that it's how you handle the stress that can make a difference,"Dr. Doris Day, an attending physician in dermatology at Lenox HillHospital in New York City, told HealthDay. "The mind-and-body connectionis incredibly powerful. It helps to try and keep perspective, put thebig things that happen in life, the major milestones, in their place andkeep an open mind."
