This is the difference in teaching styles between the East and the West. In
China, there is a tradition that students are required to clean their schools
from the first grade through high school. Their cleaning duties include floor
dusting, cleaning the hallways and moving the desks. I considered myself lucky
as the school toilet was not on the list when I was young. Nowadays some schools
reportedly require students to clean the toilets.
The purpose of students cleaning, as my teacher explained, is to encourage
respect for the school environment and more importantly, to learn how to be part
of society and develop concern about collective interests.
However, requiring students to clean at school is a foreign idea in many
foreign countries. The argument is that the purpose of school is to educate, not
to use child labor.
I can’t say which side is right or wrong. But speaking from my own
experience, it was not all that bad.
Let me take you back to the 1990s. When I was in middle school, we were
required to take turns to clean up the classroom after school. We were called
"zhirisheng," which translated into student on duty. I liked it. It made me feel
like I was old enough to take some responsibility.
To be clear, I hated cleaning. Like many spoiled single children, I did not
have to do any cleaning at home. My mother took care of all the housework so
that I could focus on studying. But somehow, I enjoyed cleaning at school. First
of all, it was a relaxing opportunity. There were not many non-academic
activities in schools. Outdoor activities were not encouraged as our over
protective parents were afraid we would get hurt. We often had to sit in the
classroom all day long, repeatedly taking notes and doing endless homework.
Therefore, any chance of freeing myself from studying and any opportunity to
take my mind off homework was precious time for me.
Secondly, we had fun a lot while cleaning. Unlike the "noisy" classrooms in
the West, we have to remain absolutely silent to respect the teachers during
class. There was not much opportunity to interact with other students. Back in
those days, if a student approached another student of the opposite sex about a
non-academic topic, they would be laughed at.
Therefore, cleaning together after school was a social interaction
opportunity for us. We could make new friends and talk freely about anything
with anyone.
