Zongzi, the sticky rice dumplings that everyone likes to gobble during the
Dragon Boat Festival are a tad pricier in 2017. The cost of packaging for Zongzi
has risen, creating competition between companies selling the tasty holiday
tradition.
粽子，一种用糯米包成的饺子形状的小吃，是端午佳节大家都爱的美食，在2017年的价格有小幅上扬，主要是粽子的包装成本提高，使得商家之间形成了竞争。
In the last two weeks, supermarkets in China have been displaying the small
mountains of zongzi by the entrance, all packed in eye-catching colors and
designs.
在过去的两周里，中国超市的入口处都有堆成小山似的粽子陈列区，包装上有着搏人眼球的色彩和设计。
Many companies have come up with packaging aimed at children, probably
because the festival falls around Children’s Day. A lot of them feature cartoon
figures, which appeal to customers -- and the marketing strategy seems to be
working. Many customers are spending their money on the striking packages.

However, the tactic has brought problems, too. Costs of Zongzi boxes have
been going up. Since the second half of 2016, some of the smaller paper-making
companies have been shut down because they failed to meet environmental
protection standards. That has raised the price of low-grade packaging materials
by 30 percent.

The famous bakery Daoxiangcun said the prices of their Zongzi have gone up
eight percent in 2017 and another, Wufangzhai, has raised prices over 20
percent. Data from research company CTR show customers usually choose Zongzi
boxes priced at about 100 yuan for themselves, and at about 130 yuan as gifts
for friends. China’s Zongzi market in 2017 is expected to be worth five billion
yuan.
著名面点店稻香村称，2017年他们的粽子价格上涨了8%，另一家老字号五芳斋的价格则提高了两成。来自调查公司CTR的数据显示，人们自己往往挑选100元左右的粽子礼盒，如果是送亲朋好友，则价格在130元左右的最受欢迎。2017年，我国的粽子市场有望达到50亿元。
