考研英语历年真题阅读要点之1991-Text 1（二）
历年真题是最宝贵的复习资料。针对考研英语，以下几个方面基本上是固定的，包括词汇量、句子结构、篇章模式、选项设置、命题规律，因此考点当然也是固定的。把真题研究透彻，对于顺利通过考试甚至取得高分是至关重要的。考研英语老师为大家梳理一下1991年Text 1中的要点，主要涉及相对重要的词汇和短语的含义和用法以及典型长难句的分析。My job as a police officer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. impose...on...“施加...于...”；refuse to do“拒绝做某事”。as充当连词，引导非限定性定语从句，补充说明整个主句。写作开头往往可以使用这一用法。external controls“外在的控制”；internal restraints“内在的限制”；far less...than...为比较句式；effective“有效的”，写作往往可以用到take some effective measures“采取有效措施”；guilt名词“内疚”，形容词形式guilty；shame“羞耻”，形容词形式shameful；embarrassment“难堪”，形容词形式embarrassed和embarrassing。

Fortunately“幸运地”，反义词unfortunately“不幸地”；阅读中，不管是fortunately，还是unfortunately，一律视为“but”，表转折。community“社区”；where引导定语从句“在这样的社区”；maintain discipline“维持纪律”；and连接前后两个由where引导的定语从句；hold up standards“提出标准”；that引导定语从句；proclaim“声明”；tolerate“容忍，宽恕”。

especially in our larger cities and suburbs为插入语；more and more其实就相当于increasingly，也就是说Yet more and more these inner restraints are loosening.=Yet these inner restraints are increasingly loosening.其中，loosen表示“放松”。Your typical robber has none.省略了restraints；property“财产”；enrage=en+rage，en-表示“使动”的前缀；rage名词“愤怒”，也可以充当动词，表示“发怒”；enrage就表示“使愤怒，激怒”。
