原因状语从句部分since energy pinch will make it difficult to continue agriculture，it充当形式宾语，真正的宾语是to continue agriculture...。针对it充当形式宾语，翻译的时候，往往直接把it用真正的宾语替换即可。This指代前面提到的人口困境。in the...fashion以...方式。that引导定语从句，修饰fashion。其后it也充当形式宾语，真正的宾语是to...yields。整句话的译文：这种困境是确定无疑的，因为能源紧缺使得农业很难以这种高能量消耗的美国方式继续存在下去，这种方式使得农民数量的减少和产量的提高二者的结合成为可能。

这句话的结构是You have all heard it repeated that..., that..., and that...其中，it充当形式宾语，真正的宾语是三个并列的that引导的宾语从句。这种情况，因为宾语部分内容较多，所以翻译的时候可以灵活变通。本句就可以说“你们多次听过这样的说法”，然后分述三个宾语从句，即真正的宾语。repeated为it的宾语补足语，表示“反复的，再三的”，可以理解为“多次”。整句话的译文：你们多次听过这样的说法，科学家通过归纳法和演绎法来工作；从某种意义上来说，他们利用这些方法从大自然中总结出某些自然规律；然后根据这些规律，借助自身的一些特殊本领，来建立自己的理论。
