foundation, base，basis, groundwork 基础
base
可指具体或抽象的“基础”，强调支持、力量等的来源
the base of a column 柱基;to build up the customer base 建立客户基础
basis
与base 相似，但主要用作抽象意义
use those facts as basis of her argument 用那些实事作为她论述的基础
foundation
①地基、房基 the foundations of the houses 房屋的地基
②与basis 相近，指抽象的“基本原理，基础”
The rumor is totally without foundation.这谣传毫无事实根据。
groundwork
主要用作抽象含义，指“(为使行动、计划等成功而提前做的)准备工作、基础性工作”
laid the groundwork for future negotiations为今后的谈判做准备
reason，grounds，excuse，pretext 原因，理由，都可与介词for 连用或接不定式
reason
普通用词，指做某事或某事发生的原因、理由
grounds
指做、说或相信某事的充分的理由、根据，尤用于正式或涉及法律的场合
I left my job on medical grounds.我因健康的缘故辞去了工作。
excuse
指对自己的行为的解释、辩解，可以是真实的或杜撰的理由、借口
Late again! What's your excuse this time?又迟到了，你这次有什么借口?
pretext
指为了掩盖真实原因而为自己(尤其不好的)行为找的托词、借口
This incident was used as a pretext for intervention in the area.这次事件成了干涉那个地区的借口。
single ，sole ，only ，solitary ，unitary 单一的/惟一的
single
“单一的，专一的”，有把不同的东西统一标准或合为一体的意思
a single scale of wages 单一工资等级
强调“只有一个” a single-sex school 男子(或女子)学校
unitary
(国家或机构)中央集权制的，统一的 a unitary state 中央集权制国家
only
“惟一的，仅有的”，仅用做定语
the only surviving member of the family 那一家惟一在世的成员
sole
同only 同only
(某人)独占的，全权处理的 the sole owner 拥有全部产权的物主
solitary
也表示“惟一的，仅有的”，但一般用于否定句和疑问句中

“单个的，孤单的”，带有感情色彩
superior, super, advantageous, beneficial 好的;有益的
superior
“更好的，更高的”，强调与同类事物比较，常与to 连用

“顶好的，超级的”，表示称赞 a ~ meal/place 一顿美餐/一个很棒的地方
advantageous
“(对形势)有利的，有帮助的”
