【分析】并列句。but连接两个互为转折关系的分句，两个分句都是简单句;第二个分句冒号后的部分补充说明side effect.

【点拨】parachute的字面意思是“降落伞”，但在本句中引申为“保护，保护伞”。

【分析】简单句。句子主干为This “added-worker effect” could support the safety net。过去分词结构 offered by...disability insurance作后置定语;不定式结构to help…作目的状语。
【译文】这种“附加劳动力效应”可以加强由失业保险和伤残保险所提供的社会保障体系，以帮助家庭渡过难关。
【点拨】注意句中的几个表达：safety net指“社会保障体系”，unemployment insurance指“失业保险”，disability insurance指“伤残保险”。
Steelworkers, airline employees, and now those in the auto-industry are joining millions of families who must worry about interest rates, stock market fluctuation, and the harsh reality that they may outlive their retire-ment money.
【分析】复合句。主句主干为：Steelworkers, airline employees, and now those...are joining millions of families。Who引导的定语从句修饰families;在该从句中，名词短语 interest rates, stock market fluctuation 及 the harsh reality构成并列平行结构，共同作worry about的宾语。 句末that引导的从句作reality的同位语。
【译文】钢铁工人、航空公司雇员以及现在的汽车业职员正在加入那些担心利率、股市波动和退休金不够用的数百万家庭的行列。
